February, 2012
"Members' tanks" features Ralph Perkins
this month. More than one tank, too.
My own tanks: I finally set up a Malawi cichlid tank. I have two species I
got from Dave Banks, Yellow ones and Blue ones. Some of the yellow ones tried to
go back home and did not get far, but the rest are settled in. The Blue ones
seem more content and haven't leapt for freedom yet. They may be as smart as some
of the dumber new world cichlids.
This time, the move went more easily. I put in a new, empty tank, and moved
all the stuff from the old tank. A cover might have saved those yellow fish
{Scientific name: Yellow fish}.
I'm making a mini-fishroom upstairs, The reason being that I get to use the
free light-source {The Sun} and it's warmer upstairs. I still want to finish
insulating and then heating the real fishroom. I've been getting more fish that
can take lower temps, and here's more information for anyone who wants to go
that route: angelfish don't like sixty degrees Fahrenheit! I left the heater for
the other fifty-five gallon tank unplugged for an embarrassing length of time.
One made at least a week, but all four died, along with 3 rams. One ram is still
with us, though! The plants are very happy, one Anubias barteri even
flowered. I'm not sure how it happened, but I suspect that a gordon setter
unplugged the heater when foraging for fish-food. It turns out that one dog can
eat more fish-food in a minute than a whole fishroom of fish can eat in a year. That
minute includes opening the cans. One setter even opened one of those canned-snails
containers made of tin.

*Upcoming TFCB events, etc. pasted from Dave Banks recent email:
This month we will have
Steve and Abbie Ahern sharing their experiences with aquaponics. Steve and
Abbie were "charter" members of TFCB, attending the very first meeting and
they were very active for many years. Steve was the first newsletter editor,
even before it had a name! Steve was also the first TFCB member to go the NEC
convention with us. They soon had many tanks and were breeding fish, they
seemed to have an endless supply of Geophagus and gourami young! Steve has
posted some photos of their aquaponic "fruits" on our yahoo group, check them
out:
The NEC convention is fast approaching, there will
be many changes this year, so check the schedule carefully and read about the
convention at
http://convention.northeastcouncil.org.
One highlight will be Hans Evers from Germany, his enthusiasm and good nature
will spark something in everyone I think. He is the editor of the new
Amazonas magazine too.
Still working on details for our March meeting,
will send emails out as soon as things firm up. This should be an exciting
one!
Our April speaker has confirmed. Randy Carey will
be speaking on danios and rasboras. Randy last spoke here in 2001. Randy
will also be speaking in Montreal and Pittsford, and we will plan for him to
do a different program at each of those clubs so consider traveling to see him
speak either Tuesday or Wed night too!
Also working on a May speaker but nothing
confirmed yet. However June will be a highlight as we have Ted Judy linedup.
Ted was involved in the TFH breeder contest last year and ended up spawning
over 100 species of fish!! He will also speak in Montreal and Pittsford, and
will have different program there as he is doing at TFCB, so another great
opportunity to visit one of our close clubs!
thanks
David
